The Strand is a landmark steeped in history on the Marietta Square. It was built in 1935 as an art deco movie palace and stands as the last remaining historic theatre in the county. In the early 2000s, The Strand had fallen into disrepair and was in danger of demolition. A group of Marietta citizens formed the nonprofit Friends of the Strand, Inc. and fundraised to save the historic theatre. Their efforts were a success, and the theatre reopened after an extensive restoration in 2008. Today, the Earl and Rachel Smith Strand Theatre lights up downtown Marietta with films, live music, comedy, theatrical productions, arts education, and more. Whether patrons want to step back in time to glimpse a bygone era or see the current acts of today, The Strand is the heart of the local cultural landscape.
